I worked in collaboration with Executive Director Liane
MaLossi Kerbyson at Family Promise of Greater Concord
[New Hampshire] to design a facility that would both
work as a day center and transitional living center for the
unhoused in Concord, NH. Family Promise has a specific
clientele that they focus on, which is homeless mothers and
children. This was influential in deciding apartment sizes
and layouts, along with accommodating other aspects of the
design around fostering the families that would be living
here.
This was all to be done without neglecting the rest of the
homeless population of the local area, and trying to meet
communal needs and services for the public in junction with
the privacy and safety needs of the clients. The secondary
design goal was to create a space that would benefit the
public regardless of their housing status, which would
make a place where people can feel safe while interacting
with the unhoused of their community in a way they might
not otherwise.
My hopes are that this would help to remove stigmas that
are held towards the homeless due to a lack of contact given
to them by their societal neighbors. Though at the same
time, I wanted to maintain a safe, secure, and comforting
environment for the clients that would be living here. The
second floor is completely dedicated to the transitory
residents, who would have their own apartments and a
community living room with a balcony.
