Dome Homes is a residential project of ~20 apartments based primarily on the need for athlete accommodation during the 2028 Los Angeles Summer Olympics. After that temporary need of the athlete housing, a conversion to permanent housing would be made. We were instructed to design for a chosen demographic, which I chose people transitioning from temporary housing post-homelessness. This would mean Dome Homes would be their first home post-homelessness without a caseworker.
We also had a give-and-take with the adjacent church site, where we removed one of their halls. Something was to be given back in return. In my instance I combined our parking needs into an underground lot that leads to the church, along with shared spaces like the parklette connecting the church and the apartments, and the multipurpose lobby that has smaller spaces for gathering and talking, computer spaces, free Wi-Fi, and is designed to be a connecting place for the community.
